Why it’s a big deal: Many manufacturers are starting to develop cameras meant for use in UAVs and other industrial applications by removing the parts that make them a conventional hand-held camera. This makes them lighter, allowing increased performance in a smaller package. The Sony ILX-LR1 or Alpha LR1 has a resolution of 61MPA, uses a mechanical shutter, and is purpose built for inspection, investigation, surveying, and mapping. It is the replacement for the Sony RX1R II 41MP camera that has been used for years in UAVs.
